The Colorado Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) is a statewide review committee that reviews all deaths of all Coloradans who die while pregnant, or up to 1 year from the end of a pregnancy. The MMRC comprises a group of health care providers, public health professionals, and people with lived experience. The group includes expertise in:
- obstetrics/gynecology
- maternal-fetal medicine
- midwifery
- nursing
- anesthesiology
- addiction medicine
- forensic pathology
- psychology
- psychiatry
- mental and behavioral health care
- substance misuse
- doula care
- patient advocacy
- rural health
- social work
- violence prevention
- public health
The MMRC reviews a variety of records, including:
- health records
- autopsies
- toxicology reports
- policy reports
- behavioral health and social services records
- family interviews
- social media
This information is used to create a de-identified case summary that has all personally identifiable information and protected health information removed.
De-identified case summaries are reviewed by the MMRC to:
- Determine the annual number of maternal deaths in Colorado.
- Determine whether the death was related to the pregnancy.
- Discuss whether the death could have been prevented and if so, how it could have been prevented.
- Identify trends and factors that might contribute to maternal deaths.
- Recommend strategies that reduce and stop future deaths.
- Recommend strategies to achieve equity in maternal health outcomes.
