Why your office needs an Immunization Champion
An Immunization Champion is someone who is passionate about protecting the health of children, adolescents and adults by encouraging appropriate and timely vaccinations. She or he can serve as an advocate and go-to resource for immunizations in your practice. This person can be a physician, but it may be more practical to have a mid-level provider, nurse or medical assistant who will help generate support and cooperation from coworkers.
Typical duties of an Immunization Champion could include:
- Vaccine ordering.
- Unloading, stocking and managing vaccine inventory.
- Implementing office-wide strategies to increase vaccination coverage, such as reminder/recall, offering vaccines at each well child check, etc.
- Utilizes the Colorado Immunization Information System (CIIS) to document vaccines administered and determine which vaccines a person needs at the point of care.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program.
