Methodology

  • Transcription-mediated amplification (TMA)

Acceptable specimen(s)

  • Urine: 2 mL of urine in Aptima transport tube (yellow label). The patient should provide a first-catch urine specimen in a urine collection cup. Use the disposable pipette provided with the urine specimen collection kit to transfer a urine sample from the urine collection cup into the Aptima transport tube within 24 hours of collection.   • Pharyngeal swab: Follow the pharyngeal specimen collection guide above.
  • Rectal swab: Follow the rectal specimen collection guide above.
  • Vaginal swab: Follow the vaginal specimen collection guide above.

Specimen labeling

A minimum of two of the following are required on the specimen label:

  • Patient first and last name
  • Date of birth
  • Medical record number (MRN) or patient identification (ID)

The following information is optional, but highly preferred:

  • Collection date
  • The chain of custody number, if ordered through LabOnline

In addition, staff will label the urine sample with a capital “U”, the rectal sample tube with a capital “R”, the pharyngeal sample tube with a capital “P”, and the vaginal sample tube with a capital “V”.  

The lab will not process samples without appropriate identifiers on the label. Be sure the information on the label matches what is listed on the test order. Write legibly.

  • Urine in Aptima transport tube
    Room temperature: 30 days
    Refrigerated (2-8°C): 30 days
    Frozen: 12 months
  • Swabs in Aptima transport tube
    Room temperature: 60 days
    Refrigerated (2-8°C): 60 days
    Frozen: 12 months

Turnaround time

  • Five (5) business days.
  • Results will be available in LabOnline. 

Rejection criteria

  • Incomplete or missing test order, incomplete specimen labeling, specimen collected in expired collection kits, transport tube with two swabs, using non-Aptima swabs, missing swabs, broken specimen containers, urine samples not in between the black fill lines, received out of hold time, received out of temperature
