Flu information for providers and schools

Public health reporting

  • Influenza-associated hospitalizations
Patients who have a hospital admission date 14 days or fewer after a positive influenza test or a hospital admission date three days or fewer before a positive influenza test.
  • Influenza-associated pediatric deaths
Report any suspected of confirmed influenza-associated pediatric death in children under 18 years.
  • Outbreaks in long-term care facilities
Contact your local public health agency to report:
    • Suspected influenza outbreak: One resident with a positive flu test among one or more other residents with influenza-like illness (ILI) within a one-week period.*
    • Confirmed influenza outbreak:  At least two residents with a positive influenza test. Note: This outbreak definition is different from previous seasons due to the co-circulation of COVID-19; the previous definition required only one positive influenza test among 2 or more residents with ILI.

*The occurrence of respiratory illness among residents should first be considered suspect for COVID-19. If influenza or other respiratory illnesses such as RSV are circulating locally, these pathogens should also be considered suspect until testing proves otherwise. Co-infections of SARS-CoV-2 and other viral respiratory pathogens can and may occur.
