Adult day programs

Target population

Medicaid-eligible seniors and adults with disabilities who are isolated or who can't manage independently. Eligibility is based on a determination that such services will prevent a nursing home placement.

Services provided

Social activities and assistance with activities of daily living, such as eating, bathing and dressing, provided during the daytime hours Monday-Friday on a regularly scheduled basis at an adult day services center. The facility may apply for designation as a specialized adult day center if two-thirds of its client population are stroke victims who need intensive rehabilitation, or have any of the following diagnoses:

  • Alzheimer's and related disorders.
  • Brain injury.
  • Multiple sclerosis.
  • Chronic mental illness.
  • Developmental disabilities.
Licensed staff routinely on-site

In general, the regulations don't require licensed staff. Specialized adult day centers must have a nurse or a certified nurse aide on duty at all times. Adult day programs that can provide services to people with brain injuries must receive specific training in caring for this population, have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, and be trained in and demonstrate competency in seizure prophylaxis and control.
