Capacity Building and Training Program
Office of STI/HIV/Viral Hepatitis
Our mission
The Capacity Building and Training Program aligns with the mission of the Office of STI/HIV/Viral Hepatitis (OSHV) to promote high quality services, innovative public health practice, and community partnerships. Our goal is to disrupt health inequities related to sexually transmitted infections (STI), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and viral hepatitis (VH) in Colorado.
What we do
We are responsible for developing and sharing knowledge and skills related to STIs, HIV, and viral hepatitis. Our adaptive and innovative structures help strengthen the STI/HIV/VH workforce and continuously enhance its capacity.
How we do it
We meet our goals through health promotion and education, training, and offering technical assistance to internal staff and community-based contractors. Program staff also provide public health detailing updates to clinical providers and local public health agencies. We cooperate with all programs within the Office to create cutting-edge practices and investments throughout the STI/HIV/VH prevention and care continuum.
Who we are
We are a cross-functional team whose interdependent activities address core capacity-building and development for the publicly funded STI/HIV/VH policy priorities in Colorado. The multidisciplinary team functions include:
Public health education and promotion:
Conducts social marketing to reach adolescents and young adults with actionable information to prevent STI/HIV/VH and access medical care.
Public health detailing service:
Through webinars, provides epidemiological updates and pertinent screening and treatment recommendations to advance knowledge and skills among primary care practitioners.
Coordinated capacity building and technical assistance:
Coordinates technical assistance across sectors, in-depth consultations, customized coaching using virtual and in-person training sessions, online learning options, and guidance materials from national capacity-building networks.
Our funding and frameworks
Our activities are funded through federal grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the State of Colorado. National policies and state epidemiology and service utilization data provide the frameworks for our programmatic strategies.
