EHDI 1-3-6 Goals for Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
Often, “EHDI 1-3-6 goals” are referenced at various newborn hearing committees and meetings. This describes an ideal timeline where infants are:
- Screened by 1 month
- Evaluated by 3 months
- Receiving early intervention by 6 months
Why infants may not meet guidelines
Some infants may not meet these guidelines due to personal/family circumstances, serious illnesses or health conditions that require a long stay in a neonatal intensive care unit, or other extenuating circumstances.
Some infants may never get screened, evaluated, or receive intervention for hearing differences due to the infant passing away or a parent/legal guardian refusing services, as is their right under the law. Some infants may not receive these services in Colorado due to moving out of the state.
About the data
The Tableau data dashboard above is meant to represent the overall aggregate “state-of-the-state.” The data shown reflects current, available data delayed 2 days from birth certificate, and one day delayed from data entry in the Health Information Data Systems Newborn Hearing application.
The current format is a representation of requested data points from the Colorado Infant Hearing Advisory Committee (CIHAC), with some data awaiting additional feedback. Values under 5 are suppressed.
EHDI 1-3-6 data
- 1 month: 30 days screen
- 3 months: Diagnostic evaluation.
- Evaluation by 3 months while suppressing values < 5 - Further CIHAC feedback required
- 6 months: Awaiting CIHAC feedback (taking into consideration <5 suppression criteria
- Overall in intervention data - Awaiting feedback from CIHAC after evaluation data representation is complete

Maternal Child Health (MCH) Dashboard
A collaboration with other Maternal Child Health programs to represent EHDI data by race/ethnicity and geographic location in Colorado. EHDI data will be represented according to the standard criteria used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Values under 5 will be suppressed. This will be a static data pull by year.
Data product
Development of a one-page annual data handout is in progress. This will be a static, annual data handout. Anticipated draft handout available by February 2026.
