Governor Polis, CDPHE Discuss Efforts to Strengthen Colorado’s Healthcare Workforce

$18.8 million in Practice-Based Healthcare Education grants awarded to expand Colorado’s health care workforce

DENVER -  Today, Gov. Jared Polis and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Executive Director Jill Ryan discussed Colorado’s efforts to strengthen the healthcare workforce through the Practice-Based Healthcare Education grants. The Governor visited the Lowry Family Health Center, which received a grant for the Colorado Works for International Physicians program, an innovative effort to enhance the state’s health care workforce. During his visit, Governor Polis met with physicians participating in the program.

“In Colorado, we are committed to ensuring everyone has access to the affordable and quality healthcare they need. By investing in healthcare training and education, we are connecting Coloradans with the skills they need to build careers and get good-paying jobs while expanding our healthcare workforce and saving people money on healthcare,” said Governor Polis.

Jill Hunsaker Ryan, executive director of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, echoed the sentiment. “Colorado has a tradition of attracting the best and brightest to our health care workforce, but that doesn’t just happen by accident. We need to be intentional about providing opportunities, which will ultimately serve the people of Colorado.”

The Colorado Works for International Physicians program trains international medical graduates to enter primary care physician residency programs and obtain medical licenses to practice in the United States.

"Our participants bring a wealth of experience and dedication to patient care. We are proud to support these talented individuals in their journey to becoming licensed physicians in Colorado," said Dr. Phillip Fung, Medical Director at CO-WIP.

With 123 areas in Colorado experiencing health care shortages and a projected deficit of 3,000 physicians by 2030, efforts like the Practice-based Health Education Grant Program are essential. Each licensed international medical graduate physician may care for up to 2,000 patients annually, helping to bridge the gap in physician capacity.

According to the Colorado 2022 Talent Pipeline Report, the health care sector has the highest demand for people to fill jobs, with more than 887,865 unique job postings between August 2021 and 2022.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment recently announced 23 grant awards from the Practice-based Health Education Grant Program, which aims to increase the capacity to train students to join the healthcare workforce in Colorado. CDPHE has awarded more than $18.8 million to 17 organizations to fund 23 programs reaching people across Colorado.

El Gobernador Jared Polis y el Departamento de Salud y Medio Ambiente de Colorado analizan esfuerzos para fortalecer la fuerza laboral de atención médica de Colorado

$18.8 millones en subvenciones de Educación en Salud son otorgadas para ampliar la fuerza laboral de atención médica de Colorado

DENVER - Hoy, el gobernador Jared Polis y la directora ejecutiva del Departamento de Salud Pública y Medio Ambiente de Colorado, Jill Ryan, hablaron sobre los esfuerzos de Colorado para fortalecer la fuerza laboral de atención médica a través de subvenciones de educación en atención médica basada en la práctica. El Gobernador visitó Lowry Family Health Center, centro que recibió una subvención para el programa Colorado Works for International Physicians, un esfuerzo innovador para mejorar la fuerza laboral de atención médica del estado. Durante su visita, el gobernador Polis se reunió con los médicos que participan en el programa.

“En Colorado, estamos comprometidos a garantizar que todos tengan acceso a la atención médica asequible y de calidad que necesitan. Al invertir en capacitación y educación en materia de salud, estamos facilitando a los habitantes de Colorado  las habilidades que necesitan para desarrollar carreras y conseguir empleos bien remunerados, al mismo tiempo que ampliamos nuestra fuerza laboral de atención médica y les ahorramos dinero a las personas al recibir atención médica”, dijo el Gobernador Polis.

Necesitamos ser proactivos a la hora de brindar oportunidades que, en última instancia, sean para el bienestar de las personas en Colorado.

El programa Colorado Works for International Physicians capacita a médicos internacionales para ingresar a programas de residencia de médicos de atención primaria y obtener licencias médicas para ejercer en  Estados Unidos.

"Nuestros participantes aportan una gran experiencia y dedicación a la atención al paciente. Estamos orgullosos de apoyar a estas personas talentosas en su camino para convertirse en médicos certificados en Colorado", afirmó el Dr. Phillip Fung, director médico de CO-WIP.

Con 123 áreas en Colorado que tienen escasez de atención médica y un déficit proyectado de 3,000 médicos para 2030, esfuerzos como el Programa de Subvenciones para Educación en Salud basado en la Práctica son esenciales. Cada médico graduado en medicina internacional con licencia puede atender hasta 2,000 pacientes al año, lo que ayuda a cerrar la brecha en la capacidad de los médicos.

Según el Informe sobre la Cartera de Talentos de Colorado 2022, el sector de la atención médica tiene la mayor demanda de personas para cubrir puestos de trabajo, con más de 887,865 ofertas de trabajo entre agosto de 2021 y 2022.
