Mpox and shigella

Mpox and Shigella are here. Know how to stay safe.

Mpox

Mpox is a virus that can be transmitted through close physical contact, including sex.

Symptoms include skin bumps or rash, which can look like blisters or acne, as well as flu-like symptoms.

If you have symptoms, get tested. Treatment is available.

Anyone at risk of mpox can get vaccinated. Two doses give the best protection. The mpox vaccine can be given in a way that won’t cause a scar.

Shigella

Shigella are bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain. Shigella can be transmitted through anal or oral sex, or anal play.

Protect yourself and your partner from Shigella infection:

  • Wash your hands, genitals, and anus with soap and water before and after sex.
  • Use condoms during anal and oral sex.
  • Use latex gloves during anal fingering or fisting.
  • Wash sex toys with soap and water after each use, and wash hands after touching used sex toys.
  • If you or your partner has been diagnosed with shigellosis, do not have sex for at least two weeks after the diarrhea ends.
