Methodology
Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)
Acceptable specimen(s)
Mosquitoes
- Only mosquitoes collected in Roche MagNA Lyser green beads collection tubes will be accepted.
- Minimum number of mosquitoes per collection tube is five (5), and the maximum number is 69 mosquitoes per collection tube.
Avian oral swab
- Synthetic swabs with aluminum or plastic shaft in viral transport media (VTM).
- Specimens must be approved by the local county health department and the CDPHE Zoonosis team prior to submission.
Specimen labeling
- Label the collection tube with the LabOnline chain of custody number.
- This number is found under the barcode on the chain of custody form that begins with the letter “L” followed by six numbers.
- Place the tube in a biohazard bag, and place the chain of custody form in the outside pocket of the biohazard bag.
- The lab will not process samples without the chain of custody number on the label. Be sure the information on the chain of custody number matches what is listed on the chain of custody form.

Turnaround time
Ten (10) business days.
Results will be available in LabOnline.
Rejection criteria
Incomplete or missing test order, incomplete specimen labeling, specimen collected in expired collection kits, quantity not sufficient for analysis, gross contamination, received out of hold time, received out of temperature
