An x-ray sales and/or x-ray service company registers with the X-Ray Certification Unit (XRCU) to engage in the business of selling, leasing, transferring, lending, assembling, installing, maintaining, repairing, storing, trading out, disabling, or disposing of radiation machines and their related components or is engaging in the business of furnishing or offering to furnish radiation machine servicing or services in Colorado.
A Qualified Inspector (QI) / Registered Medical Physicist (RMP) registers with the X-ray Certification Unit to perform certification evaluations of radiation machines or evaluations of x-ray facilities.
A Qualified Expert (QE) registers with the X-Ray Certification Unit to design or evaluate protective shielding around a radiation area so the area meets the public exposure requirements of Part 4.
Sales or service company
A sales/service company is a person engaging (or offering to engage) in the business of selling, leasing, transferring, lending, assembling, installing, maintaining, repairing, storing, trading out, disabling, or disposing of radiation machines and their related components, or is engaging in the business of furnishing or offering to furnish radiation machine servicing or services.
Servicing of radiation machines and associated radiation machine components, including preventative maintenance, performance adjustment, calibration, or machine repairs are other services provided by service companies.
Service technician
A service technician works for a Colorado registered service company to perform radiation machine servicing or other related tasks. In most cases, a sales technician who does not handle installation, maintenance, or service does not need to register.
Service companies must register and renew their registration annually to offer services within the state.
Reciprocity
Any person wishing to bring radiation machines into the state for temporary use must obtain authorization before conducting activities.
- Authorization may be granted for up to 180 days per calendar year.
- Submit a written notice using R-200 Form to the X-Ray Certification Unit at least 15 calendar days before using the machine in Colorado.
Removal of x-ray machines
Service companies must complete the R-61 Removal of Radiation Machine Form to notify the state of an x-ray machine and/or facility status.
- Submit the R-61 Removal of Radiation Machine Form when an x-ray machine is:
- In storage - The machine can energize if connected to a power source. The x-ray facility account stays active, and registration and annual fees still apply. Certification Evaluations (R59-1) are not necessary while the unit is in storage.
- Disabled in storage - The machine is physically inoperable.
- Transferred, sold, or traded in
- Disposed of or recycled.
- Facility closure - The facility no longer has an x-ray machine or the location is closed.

Qualified inspectors, registered medical physicists and qualified experts
Qualified Inspectors and registered medical physicists perform compliance inspections based on the regulatory requirements for x-ray machines and facilities registered in Colorado. Colorado requires registration and annual renewal for registered medical physicists, qualified inspectors, and qualified experts.
Qualified inspector (QI)
An individual meeting state requirements who has current department approval in a designated specialty/s to perform certification evaluations (CEs) of radiation machines. QI's also perform compliance inspections of x-ray facilities. Qualified inspectors cannot perform evaluations on radiation therapy, computed tomography, fluoroscopy, or mammography machines.
Registered Medical Physicist (RMP)
A registered medical physicist (RMP) is an individual who fulfills state requirements, including board certification by an approved certifying agency. An RMP has current department approval to conduct certification evaluations (CEs) on radiation-producing machines across all approved machine categories. RMPs also perform compliance inspections of x-ray facilities. Additional services include shielding designs, radiation surveys, consultations on radiation protection, and quality assurance.
Qualified expert (QE)
An individual meeting state requirements who has current department approval in a designated specialty/s to evaluate radiation shielding designs and recommend radiation safety procedures.
