Colorado expands monkeypox vaccine eligibility criteria, announces upcoming mobile clinics

STATEWIDE (September 19, 2022) — The state of Colorado is expanding its monkeypox vaccination criteria to provide protection to Coloradans before they have high-risk exposures to monkeypox. While many previous categories considered risk factors within the last 14 days, most new eligibility categories remove that time limit and consider ongoing or potential future risk. People living with HIV are also now eligible for vaccination. The state is making these changes in response to increased vaccine supply from the federal government and to ensure Jynneos vaccine doses are available for people who may benefit from getting advance protection against monkeypox.

Those who now qualify for vaccination include:

  • Anyone (any sexual orientation or gender identity) who has had close physical contact with someone who has monkeypox in the last 14 days.
  • Anyone (any sexual orientation or gender identity) who:
    • Has multiple or anonymous sexual partners, or
    • Has close physical contact with other people in a venue where anonymous or group sex may occur, or
    • Was diagnosed with gonorrhea or syphilis in the past six months, or
    • Is living with HIV, or
    • Already uses or is eligible for HIV PrEP (medication to prevent HIV, e.g. Truvada or Descovy or Apretude), or
    • Engages in commercial and/or transactional sex (e.g. sex in exchange for money, shelter, food, and other goods or needs).
  • Anyone (any sexual orientation or gender identity) identified by public health as a known high-risk contact of someone who has monkeypox.

“We closely monitor vaccine supply and demand in Colorado and adjust our vaccination criteria as appropriate in this evolving response,” said Dr. Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist. “This eligibility expansion allows Coloradans to proactively protect themselves and their communities by getting vaccinated before potential exposures, rather than only after a known exposure.”

In addition, monkeypox vaccines are now available at select state-run mobile vaccine clinics throughout the state. A full listing of currently scheduled mobile monkeypox vaccine clinics is included at the end of this release. Walk-ups are accepted as vaccine supply allows. Coloradans who can get the Jynneos monkeypox vaccine can use a secure, automated system for finding and scheduling appointments at many clinics statewide, including all state-run and mobile vaccine clinics. Details and a map of additional vaccine providers statewide are available on CDPHE’s website.

Monkeypox may begin with flu-like symptoms that can include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and exhaustion. Monkeypox can look like syphilis, herpes, blisters, or even acne. In recent cases, additional symptoms have not always occurred before the rash or bumps if they have occurred at all. Coloradans should contact a health care provider and avoid physical contact with others if they think they have been exposed to monkeypox or are experiencing symptoms.
